History

Welcome!
In the early 1870’s, Shannon Street became known as Liberty Street and the congregation took its name from its newly designated location. The congregation met here until they
purchased two lots (lots 14 and 15), located on Tanyard Street and Church Street Extended. Records indicate that the lots were purchased from Hopkins, Dwight, and Company for three hundred seventy-five dollars ($375) on July 29, 1885. The congregation raised the money to build a new church building and a cornerstone ceremony for the Liberty Street Methodists Church was held August 27, 1887.
The Liberty Street CME Church was destroyed by fire on April 27, 1892. Under the vigorous leadership of Pastor Charles W. Lane, the membership built back on the same lot a large brick church with two towers flanking the front of the building and reopened on May 1, 1893.
As late as 1943 our congregation was called Liberty Street CME Church, however, sometime after that we assumed the name Mother Liberty CME Church. This occurred because Jackson, TN is the birthplace of Christian Methodists, and we are known affectionately as the Mother Church.
May 4, 2003, a tornado destroyed the church building. Through the faithful prayers and support of the connectional church, community, and our members; we rebuilt on the same site.
Faith
Faith is the cornerstone of our church. It is part of every activity that we do, every meeting that we hold. We believe in our Lord, and that our actions are a reflection of his goodness.
Scripture
We look to the Lord for guidance in our lives. In Scripture, we find all that we need to guide us in the right path. Reading and understand Scripture helps us all live meaningful lives.
